High blood pressure, diabetes and eye related problems remain among the top health challenges facing rural dwellers in Nigeria. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, remains the number one killer disease in Nigeria and in pre-pandemic times accounted for 52% of deaths in the country. This number has grown following the pandemic.
At least 76 million Nigerians are hypertensive. Statistically, this means every 1 in 3 Nigerians has hypertension, and reportedly only 30% are receiving treatment.
With the challenges faced by our community and the wider country, we need to get involved. Healthcare programmes are an important tool towards the delivery of grassroots-based health and developmental objectives, especially for the less privileged and vulnerable in our society.
Ojiugo Centre is a selfless, non profit initiative in honour of the late parents of our beloved brother -Chief Nwabugo Ubochi He has showed insight, generosity, and genuine love by embarking on this project despite the high cost to him.
Chief Ubochi harbours no political or economic agenda in relation to this project. He is deeply concerned for the wellbeing of people in his community, given his own personal experiences, loss and the current worrying poor health statistical trends. It is hoped that this gesture will also encourage other well-meaning and capable persons within the society into action in this regard.
Regular and adequate medical care/ treatment are very crucial in human life. The awareness and the opportunity these services will bring will in no doubt make significant and positive impact on the lives of many people. The establishment of Ojiugo Free Medical Organisation located at Ojiugo Centre for the medical and community welfare is a monumental legacy, prove of charity/cheerful disposition and evidence of genuine service to mankind.
“Ojiugo” is an Igbo native word which symbolizes uniqueness, beauty and high quality. These features relate to the late mother and stepmother of the founder whose daughter is named after as well. It also extends and recognizes the role played by our indefatigable mothers in societal development.
31/12/2021 saw the commencement of Maiden Free Medical Outreach at the newly built Ojiugo Centre which was commissioned by The 1st Lady of Ondo State, Nigeria Her Excellency Chief (Mrs) Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu.
This charity, kindness and genuine love for community is well rooted in history which can be traced back to the Agro industrialist, businessman and philanthropist, Late Pa Simon Sunday Ubochi (Ama-Ala I of Mbieri Renaissance). He helped his people by training a significant number of community youths in agro business free of charge, prioritising those from poorer family backgrounds.
This legacy of selfless service to society continues through to his last born, Chief Nwabugo Ubochi. He now toes his father’s footstep in the areas of empowerment, employment and financial support to the less privileged. He is also a role model with recognised integrity, opening up education and overseas travel opportunities for several people, as well as providing positive support to people both at home and in diaspora.
This project is the starter for a series of health and economic improvement and empowerment objectives initially focused on the home village – Umuahii, Mbieri, Imo State, Nigeria. Health they say is wealth! Though not a medical professional, the founder wishes to garner and utilize the vast array of medical friends and associates, his international exposure and experience towards the improvement of primary healthcare and micro economic activities in the rural area.
